Death of retired midwife Joyce Mackintosh
Joyce was a senior labour ward midwife in Calderdale for over forty years. Beyond her official retirement she continued to provide midwifery care in the unit as a Bank Midwife until almost eighty years of age. She was named as the oldest practicing midwife in England by the RCM. A fact which both amused her and provided great personal pride.
Joyce was a highly experienced midwife with a vast knowledge and expertise, which she validated by her academic achievement as one of the first cohort of midwives to study for the ADM ( Advanced Diploma of Midwifery).
She was constantly striving to keep abreast of new research and developments especially in areas of practice, to enhance her role and support evidence-based care for women.
Joyce was a diligent member of the Calderdale and Huddersfield Branch of the RCM and concluded her active service as President of the Branch. Within her role she wore her Chain of Office as symbolic representation of her commitment to the Branch and to the Royal College of Midwives.
Joyce will be very sadly missed by family, her RCM friends and colleagues.
