Gill Walton the Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has been admitted into the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) as a Fellow honoris causa.

Fellowships are awarded by the RCOG in recognition of the work of individuals who are not existing Members or Fellows of the RCOG, but who have demonstrated the highest level of support to the development of women’s healthcare services and supported the work of the RCOG.

Gill has been a midwife since 1987 and has had a varied career in midwifery from practice, education, management and professional leadership to becoming a Director of Midwifery later in her career.

In September 2017 Gill became the RCM’s CEO and now is leading the UK’s only professional body and trade union for midwives and maternity support workers (MSWs) she continues to influence midwifery practice and the wider aspects of women’s health nationally and internationally via the RCM’s Global projects.

Commenting on becoming a Fellow honoris causa, Gill said: “It’s incredible I have been awarded a Fellowship as a midwife. Lesley Regan is an honorary fellow of the RCM too. I think this is a symbol of our two colleges and our professions striving forward together in a respectful way, recognising our unique contributions to safe maternity care.

“We already have significant joint programmes such as Each Baby Counts Learn and Support as well the Tommy’s Centre for maternity improvement. I will continue to work closely with the RCOG to influence and strive to change the culture of our maternity services together. We now have One Voice and a common purpose.

“I believe by working together maternity care is safer for women and the experience of maternity care both as a recipient and a provider is enhanced. So I look forward to continuing the RCM’s collaborative work with the RCOG to ensure women receive high quality, safe maternity care.”
