Today Plaid Cymru launched their manifesto for the General Election.

Responding, Helen Rogers the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Director for Wales said;

“The RCM welcomes Plaid Cymru’s pledge to support the restoration of the much-needed specialist mother and baby unit in Wales, although efforts and plans to reopen this much needed unit the RCM believes are already underway.

“For the past six years women in wales who have being suffering because of the absence of baby unit in Wales, which is vital for families and means women are not separated from their babies. These units are even more important for single mothers facing mental health problems alone with little or no support for family members.

“The party’s pledge to improve rural healthcare and to have maternity services within one hour’s reach of rural and peripheral communities is certainly something the RCM would support, however we would like to see more detail on how this would be achieved.

“The RCM has campaigned for a Peoples Vote on Brexit and supports Plaid Cymru stance on Brexit to safeguard Wales’s place in Europe. The RCM believes midwives and other NHS workers from other EU countries are vital to our NHS and deliver care to tens of thousands of women and their families not only in Wales, but across the UK.
