RCM calls on Government for new money to fund early pay rise for midwives and maternity support workers

Give us an early pay deal – and don’t defund other services to pay for it. That’s the message from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) as it moves to step up its pay campaign today.
The RCM is calling on the Government to ensure that any pay rise for midwives, maternity support workers and other NHS staff does not come out of existing NHS budgets and further burden the health service.
Commenting, CEO of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Gill Walton, said:
“The RCM, together with the 13 other health unions which make up the NHS Staff Council, will be pushing hard get a decent pay rise for our members before the current deal ends in April 2021. But we will also be holding ministers’ feet to the flames to ensure this is new money, rather than simply picking the pockets of other NHS departments. Last month, we asked the Prime Minister and the Chancellor to get round the table early and kickstart pay talks and we are applying the same pressure on politicians in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.”
Currently the RCM is gathering additional evidence from its members to build a stronger case to submit to the Pay Review Body to secure an early and significant pay rise for its members.
Gill Walton added, “We all know that, even before the COVID crisis, there was an iron-clad case for a decent pay rise for midwives and maternity support workers. Now we are gathering as much evidence as we can to bring to the Pay Review Body later in the year. We’ve heard the Government’s applause, now we want to hear them open their wallets.”
