Government must include NHS midwives in emergency visa extension plan says RCM
By Government must include NHS midwives in emergency visa extension plan says RCM on 02 April 2020 Midwives RCM Maternity Services RCM Member Midwifery Government
The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) is today calling on the Government to extend the visas of NHS midwives from overseas who are in the UK on a work visa, after similar visas were automatically extended for doctors, nurses and paramedics as part of the response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Commenting, RCM executive director for services to members Dr Suzanne Tyler said:
“It is wrong that midwives have been excluded from the Government’s otherwise sensible plan to extend work visas for NHS staff from overseas. They face losing their legal status when that visa expires.
Ministers must show that they are on the side of overseas midwives heading into hospitals night and day at this time of national crisis. They need to confirm that they will be included in this plan.
The entire country is united in its support for our NHS, and giving overseas maternity staff this little extra peace of mind over their immigration status is the very least the Government could do.”
