Eyes on the prize for Welsh midwifery society and RCM branch

Swansea University’s Midwifery Society and the RCM Hywel Dda branch have won the RCM’s 2020 International Day of the Midwife (IDM) competition, winning £1000 to put on educational events. Student midwife Mollie Olivia Cook is the Society President and maternity support worker Ingrid Jones is chair of the RCM Hywel Dda RCM branch, and they led on a joint entry.

“The Swansea Student Midwifery Society are ecstatic and privileged to have won the IDM competition after affiliating with the RCM Carmarthen Branch,” said Mollie. “We are currently in the planning stages of an exciting online study day with a focus on mental wellbeing, meditation, mindfulness and positivity in a time of uncertainty and confusion,” she added.

The competition was open to student midwife societies and branches that were affiliated and all entries were placed into a draw to win. Initially run in May 2020, the competition was extended until the end of 2020 because of pandemic pressures.

“It’s so great to see a midwifery society and local RCM branch working so productively together in this way. We are really keen to see even more affiliations and joint working between societies and branches because it brings great benefits to both,” said RCM Executive Director for Services to Members, Suzanne Tyler.  “I heartily congratulate Mollie and Ingrid and everyone in the society and branch on this win, and I am really looking forward to the events they put on,” added Suzanne, who also made the draw to find the winner.

Mollie and Ingird have a number of things planned and supported by RCM learning reps are hoping to hold a yoga study day, and a talk on mindfulness and positivity. The events this dynamic duo put on will be open to all student midwives at Swansea University and midwives, maternity support workers and their colleagues at Hywel Dda.

“I so pleased to hear that we had won this competition. Our learning reps are happy to be on board with the ideas and we all look forward to working together on this project,” said Ingrid.
