Today the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) calls on its members, midwives and maternity support workers (MSWs) along with students and general public to support the pay campaign, contact their local MPs and ask them to sign Early Day Motion (EDM) 199 – which calls for a decent pay rise for NHS staff, including midwives and MSWs.
In this short video, RCM Public Affairs Advisor Stuart Bonar sets out a simple way for members and the general public to support the Deliver a Decent Deal pay campaign, calling for a pay rise for midwives and MSWs.
An EDM is like a kind of petition that only MPs can sign. EDM 199 calls on the Government to award NHS staff including midwives and MSWs a decent pay rise.
How can you do this?
You can contact your MP by telephoning the House of Commons switchboard on 020 7219 3000. Or – if you prefer to email – you can send them a message, free, using the WriteToThem.com website. You just need to know your postcode. The website will do the rest.
In your call or your message please specifically ask them (1) to sign EDM 199, and explain why you think NHS staff deserve a pay rise (for example, you have experienced years of pay freezes and below-inflation pay rises). You can also ask them (2) what they think about NHS pay and (3) if they will write to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on your behalf to ask him for a decent pay rise for NHS staff.
That’s it! It shouldn’t take you too long, just a short telephone call or, if you prefer, a message to your MP. Ask them to sign EDM 199. Ask them what they think about NHS pay. And ask them to write to the Secretary of State on your behalf. The more of us who call or write, the greater the pressure on the Government to Deliver a Decent Deal. Let us know how you get on – and thank you!
